After all the research showing a relationship between oral health and systemic health such as heart health, stroke, diabetes, miscarriage and pre-term babies the American Heart Association stated that there was no direct causal link between gum disease and heart disease. This drives us dentists crazy as a direct cause is almost impossible to prove where as relationship between certain conditions or habits is more easily established.
The following is from an email to me from Dr.Chris Kammer explaining why he is angry:
Dental professionals should be outraged!
Last week on NBC’s The Today Show a registered dietician felt comfortable speaking for all of dentistry when she discounted any oral systemic link by proclaiming that
“What happens in your mouth stays in your mouth”
She did little more than repeat the American Heart Association’s recent statement that there is no clear evidence that gum disease causes heart disease.
However we all know how stupid and harmful that AHA statement is !
It’s stupid because heart disease has multi-factorial etiology and it is ridiculous to say that any one thing causes it. The statement is harmful because well meaning but highly uninformed talking head experts (like the dietician) repeat the conclusion on national stages. The unfortunate takeaway for the public is the perception that there is no connection- while in actuality nothing could be further from the truth!
95% of dental offices are not aware of the oral systemic facts that could keep their patients alive!
